How Greece’s economic crisis produced an emerging civil society in Athens

In December 2014 we went on a Metropolitan Field Trip to Athens with a diverse group of urban professionals, to discover the ‘New Europe’ in this crisis-struck capital of Greece.

Fellow traveler and journalist Letty Reimerink published an article about the emerging civil society we were most inspired by during our visit. The article is published on Citiscope, and tells the story of Amalia Zepou, deputy mayor of Athens for civil society, and initiator of the SynAthina platform – the Athens’ entry to the Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge.

The Greek economic crisis has hit this historic capital city hard. But if there is a bright spot, it is the grassroots social initiatives mushrooming all over the city.
