Built by the architect Vilhelm Lauritzen, the 1956 structure captures the architectural design of its time. Its mahogany wood, banisters, and lighting ornaments represent the Scandinavian 50s design and architecture.
The former People’s House (home to the Danish unions) was left empty for many years until 1996 when it was renovated and became Vega – House of music. Vega, the concert venue, is solely funded and run by the Koncertvirksomhedens Fond which uses public funds. Working without any shareholders or commercial owners, Vega is known as one of the best European concert venues. It has two main halls: great Vega and little Vega, along with other rooms with different characters.
Vega is a great example of how the adaptive re-use of buildings is not new.
