SUPER – The festival of peripheries
Walk slow and discover the city.
Can a festival be slow? In Milan, there is a strange festival that is ongoing from many months and it will end next year. There are not famous artists, stages, food-tracks or camping areas, this festival walks through the city and has only a main protagonist: the peripheries. SUPER wants to celebrate the suburban areas as places animated by creative and vibrant initiatives. The main aim of this project is to present another face of the zones outside the city centre. Normally, people used to consider the peripheries in a “bad” way, academic interest tends to analyses only the negative outputs of these contexts and policy makers point out only the figures of disadvantage. Nobody says these aspects are not true but a group of professions, from different fields, decided to show also the beautiful and positive part of the neighbourhoods. A storytelling able to highlight the huge world of associations, community gardens, urban commons, charities, cooperatives, groups of citizens, local institutions, enterprises, etc. which operate in Milan and are keeping active and alive many zones of the city. SUPER organises tours around the neighbourhoods, inviting people to discover hidden places and unknown organisations. These walks are led by the idea of a mutual influence between the locals, who tell their stories and explain how they are working on social contexts, and the visitors, which can have a different point of view on peripheries. Next year, all the people and organisations met on the road will be invited to the closure of this slow festival. The aim is to create a meeting where all citizens can come together and discover how everyone is living, actively, their neighbourhoods. The municipality of Milan is the main referee of this project, SUPER wants to demonstrate that peripheries are not only concepts such as “marginality” or “social exclusion” but also people. SUPER is promoting a new idea of intervention in suburban areas: not working ON the peripheries but working WITH the people who live them.
