"Sofia is a city of fragmented development, in transition, plagued by a lack of updated expertise in city governing. Sofia is also a city of many green spaces, of historical complexity that could be really exciting when handled adequately, of great location."
Antonina Ilieva will participate in the New Europe City Makers Summit on May 27-30 2016. Find out more about the programme and register below.
Meet City Maker Antonina Ilieva -member of architecture studio dontDIY and current project coordinator of interdisciplinary platform Fragment, based in Sofia, Bulgaria. She joined us for the very first New Europe Joint Venture last June at Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam.
Urban development is going through transition in Bulgaria, one of the newest EU-member states. To raise awareness and facilitate the development of the city as a sustainable and functional organism, Fragment seeks to connect actors and shape this (transition) process. They are currently designing an interaction model supporting their ideas, shaping the city into a sustainable and functional organism that adequately meets the needs of its residents.
Antonina tells us about another model: the business model that enables her and her colleagues of platform Fragment to perform their city making activities, including outside the box educational projects, interdisciplinary collaborations on cultural events, and strategies for sustainable redevelopment of dysfunctional city locations into active hubs of urban life. They have set up a construction in which the architecture studio dontDIY and its upcoming furniture brand Almost function as an alternative financing model, independent from public funding alone, to back up their participation in city-making activities, most recently linked to the work of Fragment.
Together with dontDIY, Fragment forms Sofia’s joint City Embassy. Learn more about our network of City Embassies here.
